Somalia: Islamist group arrests people for watching football game

MOGADISHU, Somalia, June 14, (Mareeg) – At least 30 people, most of them young boys, have arrested by Hizbul Islam group in Afgoye town, 30 km south of Mogadishu over watching the world cup football matches, witnesses said on Monday.

The witnesses say Hizbul Islam forces stormed two private homes on Sunday night in the town while the football fans were watching the Germany-Australia game.

Hizbul Islam imposed a strict version of Sharia in the areas they control in southern and central Somalia.

In April, the group banned Mogadishu-based radio stations from playing music, labeling it un-Islamic.

Al Shabaab also banned areas under their control of watching and playing the football games which they described as waste of time.
