Somalia: President to return back to Mogadishu

MOGADSHU (Mareeg)--Somalia’s president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed is expected to return to Mogadishu today after consulting with President Mwai Kibaki's coalition government.

During their visit in Kenya, Somalia signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday on technical assistance and capacity building.

The agreement was signed by Kenya Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula and Somalia Deputy Prime Minister Sharif Hassan Sheik Adan, who is also the country’s finance minister.

The signing of the memorandum comes three years after a similar one was signed on technical and economic agreement in 2005.

The two countries also pledged to cooperate in security, immigration and technical assistance.

Last week, President Sharif toured several African countries as part of his first official foreign trip since coming to office in February 2009.

During his trip, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed met with the presidents of Burundi, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, discussing ways to support the new Somali government.

Somalia: Explosions wound AU soldiers in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU(Mareeg)--Two blasts were heard in Mogadishu on Wednesday and residents said the explosions targeted African Union peace keepers known as AMISOM and Somali police forces who were checking mines on the road to the airport.

Witnesses said that the AU soldiers collected two injured AMOSOM soldiers from the scene. There is no contact these days from AMISOM spokesperson in Mogadishu.

No group has claimed the responsibility of the attack yet, but the blasts against government soldiers and foreign troops often claim by al-Shabab Islamists who vowed to continue fighting against the AU troops until they withdraw from the country.

Separately, reports from southern Somalia say fighting is ongoing in Rabdhure town where al-Shabab militia controls.

The fighting started after pro government soldiers attacked the Shabab. The two militias have been fighting in the region since the Ethiopian troops fled from Somalia in January.
